Once upon a time,
A little girl was happy.
But once upon a time,
A little girl grew older, grew wiser;
And once upon a time,
A little girl saw life for what it really is.
She couldn't avoid it -
It happens to everyone.
Yet, she wasn't afraid of it.
In fact, she was curious about it.
She wanted to explore what it had to offer.
Once upon a time,
A little girl's curiosity got the best of her;
And once upon a time,
A little girl got lost in the dark, murky tunnel of life.
She got lost in the dark tunnel of life,
And in trying to find her way out,
She grew older, learning a lot of things
Most people are afraid to learn.
But once upon a time,
A little girl became brave.
Once upon a time,
Darkness was no longer an enemy,
But a friend.
Once upon a time,
A little girl learned that life could often be
The enemy.
Should she have been afraid?
Most people are, when they ambark on a journey
Such as this.
Yet, she is not 'most people'.
She is her own person, and she is different.
For this, most people are afraid of her.
But once upon a time,
A little girl found a friend,
Who stuck by her side,
Guiding her with a light.
Once Upon a time,
A little girl found a second friend
Who has also stuck by her side,
And he made the light in the tunnel brighter,
Helping to guide her.
Once upon a time,
A little girl found love,
And he has stuck by her side,
Loving for who she is and who she is not,
Guiding her heart from wrong choices.
Once upon a time,
A little girl had people who loved her.
Once upon a time,
The little girl who has grown,
The little girl who has learned,
The little girl who has accepted,
The little girl who has pained,
That little girl still has those people by her side.
And once upon a time,
There is no end.
The little girl is no longer a little girl,
But a matured woman at heart,
A matured woman at soul.

Eury,
a very well written and moving piece! I read it twice to get the full affect...
Children do grow up yes, but not very often do they show the kind of courage you have shown...
Becoming an adult is never easy, but with help from friends and loved ones, it's not as hard as some may think...
I could feel the power and energy in every signle word...Making the transition from childhood into adulthood can be a terrifying experience, but you seem to have done it with unexpected grace and maturity...
Keep up the good work...
Once upon a time, you wrote and excellent poem!
Peace and white light,
Nick
Eurynome -
I have to agree with everything Nick said. The hardest part of my life to date was the 'adjustment' period that begain when I was about thirteen, and didn't begin to subside until I was about seventeen. Truth be known, I think I'm still going through that adjustment! And that's a valid point I hope you extract from this... we are ALWAYS growing, always changing, always maturing.
Your mention of friends touches me deeply - and friends can make so much of a difference in our lives. When I was a kid, my mom never approved of my friends... I seemed to attract the under-dogs, or the kids that were 'misfits' or misunderstood. I defended my friends, was loyal to them... but I have to say, as I got older, I began to re-define what true friends are. Choose your friends wisely, if you will. We are often held accountable for the actions of those we associate with.
You've written a wonderful piece here, deeply moving... it touches the heart.
Best of luck on your journey.
I look forward to reading more from you.

Thank you, everyone, for reading this, and thank you for your words. Yes, it is alright if you link, mk. The poetry I write like this one often comes to me, and if I dont write it down fast enough, I forget everything about it. I am usually pretty good at catching what my mind has to say, though. Visit again soon; more is coming!
